At the entrance to the COP you have stairs up on the left and right. Follow the right hand stairs halfway up and you will see some crumbled wall. Facing the wall, you can climb the left hand side and shoot or place a gun up there.
It is difficult to climb and can make it tough for melee to get to you.

Also, with some wood, the two openings on the backside of the COP can be blocked off.
