Post Melee in FoC
Wanted to open a new topic cause we know a slightly more about melee cause of the ability videos shown.

In my opinion it's one of the most important aspect in the game and truly can make a game shine if done right. On the other hand with poor melee you'll get a game that's a lackluster. I have few key things I'm expecting of the melee in general.

- Easy to understand
- Fast paced
- Hard to master

Easier said than done right. From the videos I've seen the melee seems to be shaping up nicely. There's variety of classes each with different abilities and the animation seems to flow nicely. However there are few details that worry me a bit. If you take a look at the Tank video "Charging Block" it seems the 1 on 1 is a bit of stale. What I mean is that both characters seem to be running towards each other the other is spamming attack and the tank is blocking. Is there a way to overcome the block? Perhaps with the strong attack you mentioned? Another thing I noticed was the lack of mobility. I'm not talking about characters being able to roll or take side leaps, but it seems avoiding attacks is rather hard because of the limited sideways movement. And if I read correctly only tank is able to block?

I cannot help to think about the similarities between FoC and Savage 2, and it worries me a bit since Savage 2 didn't bring a good melee system and ended up with stats and other things being more important than timing your attacks/abilities correctly. If you have no idea what I'm talking about here's a glimpse of Savage 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDafBJbFhZU

It's predecessor Savage 1 has a good melee system even without special abilities or complex leveling system, so I hope FoC gets the core gameplay working well before release. :)

Cant say savage has good melee system, so doesnt second part. I think developers move in right direction making characters less mobile, because to much dynamics makes every melee action game a button mashing hell. Although savage is really fun to play i dont like how bitter it looks.

And every charecter in game has block but tanks block absorbs more amount of damage.

Dragnarr, you may not worry we are doing our best to make a really nice melee fighting system.
Every character in game is able to block, but for example Paladin can block most of damage but only Tank will block 100% of damage.
There are several abilities which allow you to strike through the block or "avoid" it, for example you may froze your foe and backstab him, also there are abilities which dramatically increase your speed. And btw Tank has passive abilities which grant him higher speed while blocking.

Good to hear, just wanted to see what others have to say. And yea I agree if you increase mobility too much people will just run around slashing, like what happened with Savage 2 after some changes, so balance is the key. And I'm very pleased to hear that every class can block. Beta can't come soon enough, have a clan full of players waiting :)

Every character in game has melee weapon which deals some amount of damage, for example 10 when you hit in "forehead" and 20 if you backstab your foe, in between damage depends on angle, for example it you hit your foe from 90 degrees angle he gets 15 damage.

Every character in game has ability to block. System is pretty similar, if you block enemy hit with your "forehead" you will block almost whole damage, but the bigger angle between your "forehead" and point of hit the bigger damage you will get.

Not sure if helped you, but I hope so :)

After watching the videos couple of time more, I've noticed that the characters have a set of "combo" they perform if you attack multiple times in a sequence. Can you "spam" the melee attack over and over or do the combos mean that after say 3 or so attacks the character is unable to attack for a bit? And does each attack in a combo deal same ammount of damage or can you perform a power attack in the middle of a light attack combo? So far we've seen lots of slashing attacks, are there any piercing attack animations?
